| A | | | A brief period of rejoicing | At the beginning of Black celebration there is a voice sample saying: "A brief period of rejoicing ". It is the voice of Daniel Miller imitating Winston Churchill famous speech at the end of WW2.
"We may allow ourselves a brief period of rejoicing; but let us not forget for a moment the toil and efforts that lie ahead. Japan, with all her treachery and greed, remains unsubdued. The injury she has inflicted on Great Britain, the United States, and other countries, and her detestable cruelties, call for justice and retribution. We must now devote all our strength and resources to the completion of our task, both at home and abroad. Advance, Britannia! Long live the cause of freedom! God save the King!"

| | A Broken Frame | released in 1982, Depeche Mode's 2nd studio album indeed reflected its stark title; Vince Clarke, their main head writer and the band's drive departed, leaving the band in a great confusion and resentfulness. Martin Gore, who until then only wrote 2 songs, pulled the reigns and began writing for their second album. From now on, as well as playing guitar and keyboards, he will account for 90% of the writings, demos and pre production.
The album was recorded in London's blackwing studios and co-produced by Daniel Miller.
The album sleeve cover was designed by Brian Griffin and appeared on "100 Best Album Covers" (1999). Composed by designer Storm Thorgerson, this book focuses on the stories behind 100 unforgettable album covers in the history of music. This sleeve also appeared on "Life Magazine" in 1990.

| | A Song for Europe | | Performed by Dave Gahan, It is a cover version that was recorded especially for a Roxy Music tribute album. The project was masterminded by John Taylor (Duran Duran) and included many other local Los Angeles artists. (Alan Wilder Shunt Q&A)
It was a chemical weapon which was used by the Americans in during the Vietnam War (1962 -1971). About 20 million gallons of herbicides were sprayed in order to remove unwanted plant life and leaves which otherwise provided cover for enemy forces. Nevertheless, some veterans reported a variety of health problems and concerns which they connected to the exposure of this chemical.
Toward the end of this beautiful instrumental track you can hear blips. Those sounds are, actually, Morse code signal that conveys the message:
"if someone can hear this please help me...”

| | Black celebration | It's the name of the bands 5th studio album as well as its opening track. The album was written by Martin Gore, produced by the band, Gareth Jones & Daniel Miller and recorded at Hansa Studios (Berlin) in 1986. The track was performed by David Gahan.
Combined with somber up-tempo tracks and emotionally moving ballads, this album epitomizes their darkest sound and text.
At the beginning of "Black Celebration" there is a sample of Daniel Miller doing his best impression of Winston Churchill saying: "A brief period of rejoicing".
A projection of a clapping match-stock made out figure, accompanied this song during the "Exciter Tour".
"Black Celebration, yeah it's a pretty heavy title. It's got nothing to do with black magic like most people seem to think - it's actually about how most people in life don't have anything to celebrate." (David Gahan - Smash Hits 1986)

Visit his site @ www.richardblade.com | | Blasphemous rumors | Released in 1984, DM's 3rd single from "Some great reward" aimed its lance at organized religion, leading to the inevitable controversy.
The song's lyrics tell of a girl who did everything right in the eyes of her congregation and yet, received Gods wrath (concluded by the narrator as "God's got a sick sense of humor"…).
The single was inspired by Martin's observation of how the Methodist church services always included the reading of a prayer list for seriously ill parishioners, and still, the one at the top always died. He perceived this as a very strange ordeal that still everyone went a head thanking God for carrying out His will.
During that time, the track was met with great resistance by clean-up TV campaigner Mary Whitehouse, The Sun newspaper and the Church of England, who all spoke out against it. (Some DJs even preferred its B-side ballad, Somebody). The BBC also confessed they were hesitant to play it still; Depeche Mode got to perform the song on Top Of The Pops.
Interestingly enough, rumors surrounding this song, suggested that it was actually written about Martin's sister but, they were never confirmed. The vagueness in his lyrics and the fact that he doesn’t hand over the meaning of his songs may have led to this speculations.
It was also believed that the scandal created from Blasphemous rumors and its whimsically suggestive predecessor, Master & Servant, were in fact the reason Depeche Mode were excluded from the LIVE AID concert (conducted by Sir Bob Geldhof) which took place the following year.
Worth mentioning that, after the line "on a life support machine", there is a sample that repeats itself three times in the song and also appears at the beginning of the album. It sounds kind of like "fine line", which might be more understood in connection with the bleak text.
Another nice anecdote circulated about the song claims that during the bands performance at the Rose Bowl 101 concert in 1988, cloud appears out of nowhere and covers the sky. When the song ended, the cloud disperses as rapidly as it came…
| | BMW Isetta | It's the name of the unique car Dave Gahan drove in the video: "Never Let Me Down Again"

 | | Bosch, Hieronymus | An extraordinary painter (c. 1450-1516) whose artistic expressions dealt with religious imagery, Sin & Redemption, Heaven & Hell, and existing moral issued. His painting expresses an intense pessimism and reflects the anxieties of his time, one of social and political upheaval.
Fellow Dutchman, the world renowned photographer and Depeche Mode's long-time collaborator, Anton Corbijn, was inspired by Hieronymus Bosch and patterned "Walking in My Shoes" video after Bosch's The Garden of Earthly Delights.
The scenes on this spectacular triptych are organized in a successive thematic program. The closed wings of the piece contain a painting of the creation of the world (Genesis). When they are opened, the left-hand panel shows the earthly paradise. The subject of the central panel is an allegory of the world, in which foolish, naked souls disport themselves in a world basically unreal. Mortal life as the transitory stage, which will end in damnation, is epitomized with the right-hand panel showing the punishment of sinners in hell.
Corbijn's also integrated one of Bosch's known figures, the birdish-creature (known to DM fans as the Lady Bird), into the above single sleeve and video. | | But not tonight |
Taken from Masterpiece album, "Black Celebration", this song version was played over at the end credits of the 1986 cheesy period film "Modern Girls". Originally, the song was not intended to be released on Black Celebration; It was Sire who added it in a last minute addition to the US pressing. Eventually, what ended up making it to the US booklet were the title and the credit but without the lyrics.
Sire also decided at the last moment to flip the roles of the songs in the single and made "But Not Tonight" the a-side and "Stripped" the b-side, due to the inclusion of the "But Not Tonight" track in the film. Needless to say, Depeche Mode themselves weren't happy, but a lot of fans seem to like the song despite that. | C | | | Campbell, Hildia |

In 1997 he joined the band for their 2 promotion gigs that took place in L.A. & London. | | Client | The superb electronic feminine duo - ‘Client’- is constructed by Kate Holmes (Client A) and Sara Blackwell (Client B). They began as Depeche Mode opening act in Eastern Europe in 2001 and later got to sign in Andrews's label, Toast Hawaii. On April 2003, they released their first single.
The duo serve a minimal, poppy electro-clash in a monotonous robotic sound accompanied with songs about love, crisis addiction drug and rock n' rol. Their debut album was a critic and commercial success. It provided 3 fantastic singles, Rock & roll machine, The price of love and Here and now who also got to be mixed (among other artist) by Andrew Fletcher (aka Client F) and Daniel Miller (Mute founder).
Their laconic nicknames, fragmented images and fetish elements have earned them certain anonymity, thus managed to focus their given attention to music and at the same time create a sophisticated mysterious style.
On their second album, Martin Gore contributed his voice to a track called: ' Overdrive '. Client A complimented Martin on his involvement saying: "Martins voice is the gold-dust which turned a good song into a great track."
In 2006 Client left "Toast Hawaii" record label. The departure was a mutual decision resulting from Andrews's growing attention to Depeche Mode and neglecting his label. It was also rumored that the group became disillusioned with the way Mute got swallowed up by EMI. At the moment the band has 4 licensing deals which are about to be signed for Europe, Central and North America. Sarah and Kate has just finished their new album – provisionally called "Heartland" and mainly produced by Youth. The band is now looking for a release somewhere in 2007.

| | Composition of Sound | Depeche Mode originally started as a trio of Vince Clarke, Martin Gore, and Andrew Fletcher under the name Composition of Sound. Vince played lead guitar, Martin played keyboards, and Andrew played bass guitar.
When Dave Gahan joined later, it was decided a name change would benefit the band since the name Composition of Sound wasn't very popular with them any more. Dave came up with the name, "Depeche Mode", after a magazine fashion. | | Conroy Teresa | The bands former American press officer.
She was briefly married to Dave Gahan during the mid-nineties.
 | | Construction Time Again | Released in 1983, Depeche Mode 3rd studio album marks the arrival of Alan Wilder, whose brilliant talent and tendency for complex rich sounds helped mold the bands evolution over the next decade.
Alan also contributed the songs: Fools, Two Minute Warning, The Landscape Is Changing. The last 2 were inspired by the industrial effect on nature, pollution and the world's eco system. This is also the first time the band takes an open social stand.
'Love in itself' with its catchy tune and lush layers serve as an excellent opening song. Everything Counts becomes the strongest track on the album as it attacks greed, capitalism and perhaps subconsciously the harsh world of the music industry. Their Einsturtzende Neubauten's sampling at the end of The Landscape Is Changing, ("das ist gut... sooo gut... hah hah ha ha...") is showcasing an era of experimentation.
Martin Gore's lyrics are more interesting and showing a lot more confidence

His photographs have appeared in Vogue, Rolling Stone, Us, Details and Entertainment Weekly and his popular exhibition are presented in galleries around the world.
Anton Corbijn was born in Strijen, Netherlands. His first photograph was taken in 1972 during a live concert. In 1979, enchanted by the musical world, he moved to London, where he got into immediate contact with the most popular bands and artists of the time. His massive collaboration with REM, U2, Rolling Stones, Depeche Mode, and numerous actors, musicians and models has earned him the name, The Star photographer.
In his photography, Corbijn avoids the traditional glamour and instead favoring a rawer look, often in black-and-white. His subjects appear to be calm and far removed from everyday life. His photographs show raw emotion. He applies the same method with Depeche Mode; using his eccentric, misunderstood videos to provide them the dark remote style that has elevated them from the new romantic kids to sophisticated mysterious individuals.
Though his first encounter with the band was a photo cover to NME Magazine in 1982, his long-lasting friendship and working relationship with them will commence in 1986 with "A Question of Time" video. He directed 20 of the bands videos (including the beautiful Enjoy the silence & Walking in my shoes), designed several of their albums and singles sleeve and is responsible for a dozens of their promo shoots.
In 1990, he released a documentary book of photographs of Depeche Mode by the name "Strangers". It was shot partly in the West (California) and partly in the East (Prague) with additional shots from videos and concerts. Most of which were never seen before. It was a reflection of the enormous amount of work Corbijn had done with DM up till that point.
He also published Famouz (1989), Allegro (1991), Star Trak (1996), 33 Still Lives (1999), Werk (2000) and his latest, "U2 & I"
He received an MTV award for the video of Nirvana’s “Heart Shaped Box” and was also nominated as a director for MTV's Best group video Award ("I Feel You" – 1993) and the Grammy's Best Long Form video award ("Devotional"-1995).
His current project is a film about the life of Ian Curtis, due to release in 2006. The film is based on Deborah Curtis's "Touching from a Distance" Book. His latest work with the band was on the video from their latest release, "Playing the Angel" 3rd single, "Suffer Well".

On this special day, thousands of young Muscovites joins in a mass sing-along to Depeche songs. To be able to gather and to celebrate their favourite band provides some kind of emotional release after the hardships of communism. | | Depeche Mode | Named after a fashion magazine, Depeche Mode is often mistakenly interpreted as "fast fashion". However, the real meaning is in fact: "news about fashion" or "fashion update". (The confusion arises from someone remembering their high school French: the verb 'se d?p?cher' means to hurry, which is probably where the 'fast' originates.)

| | Empty World 3 | Known as one of the most interesting places to be, the "dash dot com" site has always been a fantastic source, providing an up-to-date, uncensored & exclusive info for the fans of Depeche Mode.
In its previous incarnation, the site was named Halo and was established by a Canadian guy name Paul. Gradually the site gained a lot of followers who made it a very riveting place to be.
A few years ago, the site switched hands and was handed to a devout Danish fan, Peter2, who was present in the forum. Peter (aka- toad & rush) became its webmaster and a couple of members, Pete & Rob, joined him as moderators.
A couple of years ago, the site merged with "Modesite" (which was another great DM site), and the hybrid was christened as Empty world 3. The manager of the former Modesite", Amigo, also joined the staff as moderator.
Unlike the official site, Empty world 3 has been known for its intelligent and eloquent posts. It was also one of the most informative sites in the net and was known for its openness approach which made it a very pleasant place to be
Empty World 3 - the story behind the name
Empty World refers to the song "World Full Of Nothing". Peter2 used the name for a Danish fanzine back in the day. However, when he learned that someone had actually thought of it before (it was also the name of a fanclub in Japan), he decided to call it Empty World 2. Therefore... this site became Empty World3.
Unfortunately, Empty World 3, is closing its gates after 10 years of activity. This is the site statements regarding its ending:
That's pretty much the long and the short of it. This site, as it is known today, will cease to exist on April 4th, the day after Depeche Mode end their current European tour. It has not been an easy decision, but it is sadly one that has to be made.
We would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who came here and made this one of the greatest Depeche Mode sites around. Thank you!
We would also like to thank Mute and EMI for their support over the years.

| | Erasure | Erasure is a British synth pop duo band consisting of keyboardist Vince Clarke and singer Andy Bell.
At the end of 1985, after tasting the success of his previous groups (Depeche Mode, Yazoo and The Assembly), Vince Clarke and producer, Flood began to audition singers for a new project. Vince initial plan was to record an album with different singers to every song. One of the candidates was Andy Bell, a 21 year old guy who worked as a butcher for a living. Chemistry between the flamboyant bell and the low-profile Clarke soon emerged; leading to Vince’s newfound fame and his most enduring project - "Erasure". Along side with his new partner, Andy Bell, they contrived an explosive and energizing synthpop, storming numerous successful singles and albums into the top charts.
Although they had a bumpy start in the form of a rather sluggish debut, "Wonderland", fantastic albums as 'The Circus', 'The Innocents' & 'Abba Esquire' were soon to follow. Great tracks as: Always, Heavenly Action, Oh l`amour, Sometimes & Take a chance on me transformed them into one of the most successful groups in the history of electronic music.
Visit Erasure site | | Exciter | Release in 2001, Depeche Mode 10th album studio sets their 1st Millennium kick-of. Produced by Mark Bell (of Bjork and LFO fame) the album is characterized by a quieter mellow sound, downbeat tracks and gentle vibrating electronic touches, thus provides its epic dreamlike ambience.
The meaning of Exciter:
1. One that excites: an exciter of animosity.
2. An auxiliary generator used to provide field current for a larger generator or alternator.
3. Electronics; An oscillator for generating the carrier frequency of a transmitter.
The cover, designed by their long-time collaborator, Anton Cobijn, depicts a greenish plant called the Agava. It’s a cactus that flourishes once in its life and holds very special qualities to it.

| F | | | Fad Gadget | Frank Tovey, aka Fad Gadget, became Mute's first signing in 1979. He went on to record numerous albums and singles under the names of Fad Gadget and, later, Frank Tovey, collaborating with an ever-changing line-up of musicians.
As well as being a considerable presence and influence on the independent and electronic music scenes in the 80s and 90s, Frank was notorious for his live performances during which he presented considerable danger to himself, his fellow musicians and, on occasion, the audience.
In 2001 during Exciter Tour, Depeche Mode came full circle when Fad gadget, which they used to support in the early days, supported them 21 years after.
Visit Fad Gadget site | | Fanger JD | | John Joseph Fanger began to work with the band since 1984, initially as their tour manager and album coordinator. Today, he is part of Depeche Mode's management. | | Fletcher, Andrew John | | One of the 3 legendary founders of Depeche Mode; Brought up in Basildon. Fletcher enjoyed a very active social life as well as a religious upbringing in the form of the local Boy Brigade club. At those club meetings he met with Vince Clarke, and the two formed “No Romance In China”. During one of their gigs at the Van Gogh youth club, they met another aspiring performer, Martin Gore. Andrew and Martin developed a profound friendship that led to the formation of “Composition Of Sound”. Later joined by Dave Gahan, another local boy, the quartet has christened itself with a new name, and a tremendous era that holds for almost a quarter of a century will begin.
As well as being a keyboardist and a bass player, Ginger-haired Fletcher (commonly known as “Fletch”), holds a most unique role in the group - he is The handshake that Seals the contract. By being the coordinator and supervisor of the financial aspects of the group, his main priorities, admittedly, are less on the musical side and more on the bands business managing, looking for their best interest. Known to be the most discreet guy amongst the members, he sets as an essential anchor, the quiet reliable force that can be leaned upon or approached at when seeking advice or emotional support.
For the past couple of years, Andy has been engaged in a most successful project; the Toast Hawaii records, a label that he has established in order to promote new talents. His first assign was the superb electronic feminine duo - ‘Client’, providing them with a firm creative partnership, being involved in every aspect of their career and encouraging his protegees to be involved in every aspect of their career. This is something he takes on after Daniel Miller (the founder of Mute records), which he perceives as a role model.

During the following years, Dave has turned into a world class performer. His resonant, distinctive voice as well as his never-ending charisma greatly contributed to the bands increasing fame. Despite not written any lyrics of his own for the band, he holds the uncanny ability to see into Martin’s words and deliver them with his emotionally profound warmth as though he has written/experienced them himself.

 | | Germany & Die Welt | It is a known fact that Germany is considered the Mode's spiritual home, and has enjoyed strong relations with the band. Depeche Mode breakthrough albums: Some Great Rewards and Black Celebration were recorded in Berlins Hansa studios and consequently were tremendously affected by the bleak climate of that period. Moreover, Martin Gore used to hang around in clubs and pubs, absorbing the atmosphere, during his 2 year mid80's residence in the city. German concerts are known to take a considerable portion from the general tour and are usually held in front of thousands of people.
It is speculated that countries with former military dictatorships (as found in South America and Eastern Europe), repressive religious regimese (Europe, Middle East & America) and high suicide rates (characterizing Scandinavian countries) tend to breed the most rabid fans and contribute to the cult surrounding Depeche Mode. In Russia, 9 May is Victory Day, a national holiday, but the date coincides with Dave Gahan's birthday, so it's also known throughout the country as 'Dave Day'. Thousands of young Muscovites joined in a mass sing-along to Depeche songs. To be able to gather and to celebrate their favourite band provided some kind of emotional release after the hardships of communism. Russian teens enjoyed a cultural emancipation with Depeche Mode akin to that experienced by American youth through Elvis and British youth through the Beatles a decade later.
In England, the church of St Edward King and Martyr in Cambridge holds services for Goths where they play Depeche Mode records. The Rev. Fraser Watts described the way in which rock music has learnt much from the church in terms of staging a transcendent live experience through the use of lighting, smoke and the rituals of participation and worship.
No surprise then that Germany (with its dark history and iron curtain days) along with the rest of the world, set the perfect background to the rise of the bands immense popularity. | | God lives underwater | Famous electronic band composed by David Reilly and Jeff Turzo. For them, Depeche Mode has been a huge source of inspiration and their favourite band.

Following that year, God lives Underwater together with producer Gary Richard arranged the much praised DM tribute album, "For the Masses". The project was received with a very warm welcome by fans and critics alike and includes some high-profile bands like the Cure, the Smashing Pumpkins, Meat Beat Manifesto, Gus Gus, Rammstein and more.
"Aside from being the first band to really explore electronic elements in their sounds," Turzo said, "Depeche Mode has written some incredible songs."
| | Goldfrapp | The English duo, Goldfrapp, is the electronic lovechild of Alison Goldfrapp (lead vocals, keyboards, and synthesizer) and Will Gregory (keyboards, synthesizer). (The lather entered the 81-04 DM's remix collections and was highly appraised as better than the original by the Mode's.)
In 2006 they are expected to accompany the band as a support act on the "Touring the angel" concerts around Europe.

His strength resides with the mysterious illusive words; they can be interpreted in so many ways. The somber, moodier-often subversive content will label them as the world’s doom& gloom group.

According to their first album's sleeve notes their name stands for "Kein Mehrheit Fur Die Mitleid" which roughly translates as "No Pity For The Majority" and this is exactly their attitude. However, according to the K.M.F.D.M. | | Memphisto | While Memphisto has no real meaning on its own, its name derives from the welding of 2 words: 'Memphis' and 'Mephisto'. Both are linked to Elvis Presley yet provide 2 different meaning:
1. The name Memphisto is homage to the town where 'The King' Elvis Presley was born, Memphis.
2. 'Mephisto' is a shortened version of 'Mephistopheles', which is a name describing a devil. Martin explanation was: "Memphisto is the name of a movie would imagine of Elvis as the devil that I invent in my head".
| | Miller, Daniel | "Daniel's been good to us and we like the way he operates. We listened to a few other companies, seeing what they had to offer but we decided to stick with him. ... He's an underestimated man." (Vince Clarke; taken from Sounds 1981; written by Betty Page.)
Considered as the godfather of technopop, Daniel Miller has made a name for himself for the past 25 years as one of the most influential figures in the music industry. Though he has dabbled in music as an artist (The Normal, Silicon Teens) and as a producer, miller is best known as the founder of the independent record label "Mute Records" - a home to Depeche Mode, Erasure, Nick Cave and Moby amongst others.
London born, Miller was attracted to the wild rock 'n' roll of Elvis Presley and Chuck Berry from a very early age. He attended film school and worked as a film editor while experimenting with electronic music and synthesizers. In 1978 he formed Mute Records, an independent record company which will be known for harboring several of the worlds leading pop bands. Under the guise of "The Normal", Daniel released two successful indie singles, 'T.V.O.D' and 'Warm Leatherette' (the latter inspired by JG Ballard's novel Crash and later covered by Grace Jones). He also created a phantom band, Silicon Teens, and released an all-electronic album of Music For Parties, which included classic rock 'n' roll songs such as "Memphis, Tennessee," "You Really Got Me" and "Judy In Disguise". Encouraged by his accomplishments, Miller went a head and signed Fad Gadget and assumed the role of the producer, his first of many to come.
"The best co-producers I worked with were Daniel Miller and Flood." (Alan Wilder; taken from Shunt.)
The real turning point for Mute came when Daniel signed Depeche Mode, a brilliant innovative electronic band which will become an essential asset, both commercially and artistically, in his label. The legend has it that their contract was sealed with nothing more than a firm hand shake. Needless to say the (rare) mutual trust and the amicable approach between the two sides had greatly influenced on the band's long lasting loyalty toward the mute label. Miller's deep involvement with the bands affair during their early as well as his tight relation with Alan Wilder will, eventually, pave the lathers way to becoming the bands fourth and official member. Moreover, his wise approach to handling the business will set as a role model to Andrew Fletcher own future "Toast Hawaii" label.
Miller has co-producer credits with their 80's studio albums: "Speak and Spell", "A Broken Frame", "Construction Time Again", "Some Great Reward", "Black Celebration" as well as several mixes/remixes. Today, he no longer takes an active part in the creation process but, rather, sets as a musical advisor, a mediator and above all – a friend.
"I think Dan felt my leaving was on the cards and was perhaps a little sad to see it happen but very understanding and always totally supportive of the Recoil project." ( Alan Wilder; taken from Shunt. )
"Depeche Mode were very confused about whether to go to with Mute or Some Bizarre ... . So I walked backstage at one of those early gigs and said to Daniel, 'I just told Depeche Mode that you're a lovely guy and they should go with you.' I told them that Daniel was very honest and trustworthy." ( Stevo- label boss of Some Bizarre; taken from Depeche Mode A Biography, 1999, by Steve Malins. )
"The real reason we didn't sign to a major label is propably that we were so indecisive it passed us by. Daniel Miller was advising us too, although he never pushed us to stay with him. He did say that whatever they offered, he would do his best to match, and if we wanted singles in the charts, he'd do his best to get that for us too." (David Gahan; taken from Depeche Mode A Biography, 1999, by Steve Malins. )
In 2002 the UK-based multimedia corporation EMI purchased Mute yet, Daniel Miller still continues to be in charge of all the company's global activities.
| | Moreira, Airto | Brazilian born, Airto Moreira is a prominent drum solo artist and singer.
Airto has also played percussion and drums with many of the greatest names in Jazz including Paul Desmond, Dave Holland, John McLaughlin, Zakir Hussain and Miles Davis. Among his many later projects, he played at the re-opening of the Library of Alexandria, Egypt, and he taught at UCLA and California Brazil Camp. As well as Jazz concerts and recordings, he has regularly composed and contributed music to film and television, including scores for Apocalypse Now, and Last Tango in Paris. One of his high profile contributions includes playing percussion on "I Feel Loved" and "Freelove".
Here are dave comments on Airto: "...On this album, there's a percussionist named Airto Moreira who at the time when we came walking into the studio in Santa Barbara, in a place where he works apparently quite a lot, I'm like, "There's some guy in the control room." We were walking into the live room and then he came walking in and we asked what he was doing and he said he was a percussionist. And at the time Mark Bell, who produced the album, was looking for a rhythm to go with this song that we were working with, and he pointed out that the rhythm that was there was very robotic and didn't have much feeling. And [Eye-E-Toe - Airto's nickname] said, "I can do something to add to that," and so we said all right, more or less, "OK, come on down, set your stuff up, see what you can do." It wasn't until later we found out this guy had worked with Miles Davis--we felt pretty stupid, actually. He was fantastic. He came down and set his stuff up on this little table and he played along to a song called "I Feel Loved," which is on the album, and he did all this kind of percussion and there was all this energy in the studio, there was a sort of hard electronic backbeat and my sort of droning dark, moody melody with the voice, and suddenly he was on fire. It was a great combination, so we used a lot of that stuff. I love that--I love when different stuff comes in and breaks up the idea that we have about ourselves. It challenges us. I definitely want to do that a lot more." ("Catching Up With Dave Gahan" interview 08/09/2001) | | Mullan, Grainne | | | Fletcher's better half; the couple married on January 16th 1993. |

| N | | | New Romantic | New Romantic was the name given to the new wave music genre and its associated fashion style that emerged in England during the early 1980s.
The New Romantic captured some of the essence of the 70's glam rock era, characterized by male wearing effeminate clothing and displaying make-up. The main difference from glam, however, was that the music was largely relying on synthesizers and the electro-pop style instead of guitar rock.
80's pop star, Adam Ant, epitomized the more beautiful aspects of New Romantics with his pirate wardrobe and flamboyant dramatic look. Pop Groups and performers such as Spandau Ballet, Duran Duran, Visage, David Bowie, Bryan Ferry and Boy George were also classified as a New Romantic acts.
At their early days, Depeche Mode's video clips (which included babies, dancing girls, toys, ballerina and even bumping cars), portrayed them as a juvenile childish band. Their outrageous sense of fashion didn't match nor captured the gravity and the depth in their music and that led for being mistakenly considered as "new romantics".

 | | No romance in china | | Andrew and Vince friendship from their "boy Brigade" days led, in1976, to the formation of 'No romance in chine', a band consisted solely of both of them. However, the duo proved to be short lived and after 3 years of not producing songs, they disintegrated. | | Norman and the Worms | In 1979, while working as a bank clerk in London, Martin Gore and a school friend, Phil Burdett, formed a guitar-based duo, Norman and the worms.
 | O | | | Oberkorn | | This is an instrumental taken from The Meaning of Love b-side and is named after small town in Luxemburg. | | Only You | | Written by Vince Clarke, this song was offered as a fair well present to the remaining members of the band upon his departure. Nevertheless, DM declined and opted to released "See You", a song Martin Gore wrote in his youth. Under Yazoo, (Vince and Alison Moyet short-lived yet successful project), "Only You" would later become a debut single and achieve critical and commercial success. | P | | | Personal Jesus | - The song was inspired by Priscilla Presley biography, 'Elvis and I'.

"It's a song about being a Jesus for somebody else, someone to give you hope and care. It's about how Elvis was her man and her mentor and how often that happens in love relationships ? how everybody's heart is like a god in some way, and that's not a very balanced view of someone, is it?"
(Martin Gore - Spin July 1990)
- The band advertise the single in a very unique way; before its release, there were ads in the newspaper telling people to dial a certain number should they wish to listen to "Your own personal Jesus".
Those who dialed the stated number were privileged to hear part of the song:
"Pick up the receiver; I'll make you a believer..."
- A couple of parts from the video were censored by MTV since they were perceived as bestiality.
- The song achieved numerous covers. Among its famous was done by the notable Johnny Cash who did stripped-down version on his 2002 album American IV, The Man Comes Around.
The "American Antichrist", the notorious Marilyn Manson covered it on their 2004 best of album - Lest We Forget. A casual, swinging (and a bit funny) version of the song was explored by Richard Cheese, who is a lounge singer and performer, in 2006.

| | The Black Swarm | This is the nickname the band gave their hard-core fans. It's relating especially to their German fans that clad themselves in black, wearing a grim facial expression, and like to hang around outside hotels and recording studios. Some of them even follow the band to their concerts, mainly around Europe.
Interestingly, this is also the name Depeche Mode used in 2005 to prevent their album dropping to the wrong hands; the band was disguised as "The Black Swarm" and the album was titled as "Dark Force". However, despite all the efforts, the scheme didn’t prevent the album from a premature leak.
DM aren't the only ones in this game - Sir Paul McCartney, Faith Hill & Alanis Morissette are also among the huge acts using aliases to make sure their new albums get to critics at newspapers and magazines. "It is really a practical thing for protection when there are people walking by desks wanting to take things." commented Publicist Mitch Schneider, who represents both Depeche Mode & Morissette.
But the publicists admit their alias plan is far from flawless - some critics, who are inundated with albums to review, give unknown artists' albums away or discard them.
Geffen Records publicist Jim Merlis explains, "You can actually out-clever yourself in these situations."
The nick name was so popular that a merchandise line sporting "The Black Swarm - clothes and accessories" was arranged for this occasion.
Here are some examples for the copies that were distributed as "The Black Swarm": CD 1 2 | Single 1 2

The name is related to Andrew Fletcher and conveys several meanings:
1. It’s the name of his Record label
2. It's the name of his favourite dish from Hansa Studios cafe
(The recipe: Slightly buttered bread with a ham, pineapple and cheese, Grilled till the cheese is melting. Serve with ketchup. Hence, the logo of the label is pineapple).
3. It’s the name of an album which featured Fletch singing cover versions of his favourite tunes - among of which are 'When the saints go marching in', 'roll out the barrel' and the old footy classic 'Back Home!'. Andrew's singing was accompanied by Alan Wilder and/or Martin Gore on piano. Alan even took a shot of Fletch for the cover . Nevertheless, Fletche's fruit of labor never saw the light of day because the band was having problems convincing Dan Miller that it was worth releasing. It is rumored this projects only copy is hidden in Martin's London flat. The album was recorded in Berlin (on a cassette machine) in about 1983.
| | Tora Tora Tora | | Taken from The band's debut, Speak and Spell, Martin Gores lyrics describe the Japanese attack of Pearl Harbor during WW2. "Tora" is a Japanese term meaning "Tiger". The expression was a code signal back to Tokyo, signifying that the stab-in-the-back mission was complete. | V | | | Venusnote Ltd. | | Venusnote is DM's company. It is used for the band's site and merchandise. | W | | | Wherehouse promotion riots | On March 20th, 1990, an in-store band appearance in Los Angeles to promote the release of Violator drew 20,000 enthusiastic fans. With such a mass attendance the affair quickly turned into a riot where bottles were thrown, windows shaken, lots of pushing and punching. Fearing for public safety as well as the safety of the group, police were obliged to close the event after 45 minutes.
 | As a consolation to the thousands of disappointed fans, the organizers made a cassette portraying the story of the event. It included narration by K-ROQ DJ Richard Blade, band member interview and news broadcasts as the drama unfolded.

| | Wilder, Alan Charles | | A brilliant musician and an accomplished pianist, Alan Wilder has played a significant key role in DM's rise to fame for 13 years.
As the former member of Depeche Mode, Wilder had a great influential input in designing and establishing the band’s rich layered dark and sophisticated sound. His contribution as the reigning musical producer, programmer, keyboardist, (and even a drummer), has redefined the band’s unique multi dimensional electronic sound in which they are identified till this day.
During his years in the band, Alan preferred leaving the writing and the singing to the other members and instead focused on developing the sound and the production. Under his hands, the poppy-light hearted tone characterized by his predecessor, Vince Clark, was altered and deepened into a more mature atmospheric direction. (Martin Gore’s lyrical depth was beautifully entwined with those lush textures of sounds). His previous experience working with bands as well as being a classically trained pianist has landed him complete freedom in reshaping and directing the bands musical structure. One of his greatest accomplishment, (and undoubtedly, DM’s greatest achievement of which they are identified till this day), is turning one mediocre harmonic track called: "Enjoy the silence” into an astounding sweeping hymn
On June 1st 1995, after a grueling and exhausting 14 months tour in which the members inner relations went sour, Alan Decided to call it a day. Over a publicized message he stated that: "due to increasing dissatisfaction with the internal relations and working practices of the group, it is with some sadness that I have decided to part company from Depeche Mode". Now, that he was freed from his engagement with the band, Alan began focusing solely on his solo project, “Recoil”, and his new found family with Hepzibah.
