Here's the full interview:
=====================
DM Fanclub: We met Fletch and Jonathan Kessler a few weeks ago and they told us how impressed they are with the Israeli DM Fanclub. What do you know about our Israeli DM Fanclub?
Alan Wilder: I have to be honest - I didn’t know much about it. I met Vladimir from www.depmod.com recently and he told me about the huge support and the DM community over in Israel. Sounds like it’s time for me to do some proper research:) Now I have learnt that you only started the Fan Club after I left DM!
DM Fanclub: Lots of fans from our fan club believe that someday you will co-operate again with Depeche Mode. Do you see any chance in the far future for something like that or any other collaboration with DM?
Alan Wilder: Many people ask this question but it’s not something I’m considering. I have no regrets about leaving when I did even though, for the most part, I enjoyed my time with the group.
My DM years were good to me and set me up to follow my path ever since, without having to compromise. I appreciate that.
DM Fanclub: When did you last speak with Andy/Martin/Dave...?
Alan Wilder: I haven’t spoken with Martin or Fletch for a long time but I communicate with Dave via e-mail. He sent a very nice message saying he loved ‘subHuman’ - which was extremely kind of him.
I’m pleased to see he has been so productive in recent years. He is obviously in a much better place these days.
DM Fanclub: You’re traveling in Europe, promoting 'Subhuman' - Our community in Israel is one of the biggest and we would like to host an event in Israel as well. Will you be interested of coming to Israel?
Alan Wilder: I love to travel (well, apart from the actual flying) and I’m open to visiting all sorts of places - particularly if I have never been before. However, I won’t be making any more personal appearances to promote ‘subHuman’ but perhaps we should talk about this when the next album (which I am only just starting) is finished.
DM Fanclub: Questions about your music equipment...:
What is your favourite music software you're using?
Ever thought of sharing some loops of Recoil tracks for DJs remixes...?
Alan Wilder: I use Logic 8.0 at the moment for the main sequencing. It seems to be the most friendly in terms of the arrangement page. There are a few problems with it though. I also like Ableton’s ‘Live’ for looping and stretching samples and for its effects. I run this as a slave to Logic. Beyond that, I don’t use a lot of music software. I employ some plugins of course and sometimes I venture into ProTools’ front end, but mainly I like to process sounds through analogue equipment - compressors, reverbs, filters and so on.
As for sharing loops - I have an aversion to DJs :)
DM Fanclub: What do you think about the "Playing The Angel" album? How would it have sounded if you were there...?
Alan Wilder: My unwritten rule is not to comment on newer DM material. It gets me into trouble;)
DM Fanclub: Fletch is now DJing, Dave made his 2nd solo album - What do you do other than recording albums? Any special hobbies?
Alan Wilder: I play tennis and swim (in summer) and watch a lot of sport, mainly cricket - much to my poor wife’s distress. I like photography, cinema, restaurants, drinking wine and... drinking wine...
Hep and I also enjoy interior design and renovating interesting furniture. Actually, most of our spare time is taken up looking after our children, keeping them occupied and happy. It’s a full time job which we enjoy.
DM Fanclub: Did you ever think of doing some DJ sets by yourself...?
Alan Wilder: As I said... I have an aversion, although it seems to be a good money-spinner so maybe I should consider it. How hard can it be to play a few records? Money for old rope, as we say - ha!
DM Fanclub: Is your daughter, Paris, influenced by Recoil music or is she into a different style?
Alan Wilder: Paris is really into music but not so much the Recoil sound. Her favourite bands at the moment seem to be My Comical Romance, Fallout Boy, Paramour and various other groups featuring angst-ridden teenage Americans wearing lots of black.
DM Fanclub: Last question - Can you dedicate a few words for the fans in Israel...?
Alan Wilder: I know you have been starved of live appearances in Israel. I guess for obvious reasons, your country hasn't been top of the list for artists and groups to visit but, I can assure you, your support is appreciated and doesn't go unnoticed. I hope I will be able to visit in the near future.
Very best wishes,
Alan Wilder
